Research
The Yitbarek Lab at the University of Delaware focuses on advancing avian health through cutting-edge research in immunology, vaccinology, nutrition, and microbiome science. Our work aims to improve poultry health, performance, and welfare by exploring the complex interactions between the immune system, pathogens, nutrition, and the gut microbiome.
Research Themes
🛡️ Avian Immunology
We study the development and function of the avian immune system in both embryonic and post-hatch stages. Our goal is to identify key immunological markers and pathways involved in resistance to infectious diseases in poultry.
🦠 Gut Health and Microbiota
We investigate how dietary components, probiotics, and prebiotics influence gut microbiota composition and function. We explore the role of microbial communities in nutrient absorption, immune regulation, and resistance to enteric infections.
Current Projects
-
Necrotic Enteritis Control Strategies
Studying dietary, microbial, and immunological approaches to mitigate Clostridium perfringens-induced necrotic enteritis in broilers. -
In Ovo Vaccine Delivery Systems
Developing safe and effective in ovo vaccine formulations that promote early-life immunity. -
Microbiome-Immune Interactions
Characterizing the interplay between intestinal microbiota and systemic immune responses in poultry. -
Feed additives to modulate early life gut microbiome of broiler chickens
Mechanisms of action of feed additives (enzymes, phytogenics) in early gut mcirobiome development. —
Collaborations
We collaborate with colleagues across academia, government, and industry to translate research into practical solutions for the poultry industry.
